Biophilic Design: A Fresh Approach to Sustainable Living

Jana Robinson is an interior designer passionate about transforming spaces with sustainability and wellbeing in mind. With years of experience navigating the often rigid world of design and construction, she brings a practical, no-nonsense approach to creating beautiful, eco-conscious interiors. Jana believes in leaving spaces, and the people within them, better than she found them, a philosophy that underpins her approach to regenerative and biophilic design.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Jana as a guest speaker at our September Conscious Entrepreneurs online session, where she shared her wealth of knowledge and inspired us to think differently about how we design and live in our spaces. Her insights challenged us to see sustainability not as a burden, but as an opportunity to create something better, for ourselves, our homes, and the planet.

Biophilic Design: Inviting Nature In

At the heart of regenerative design is biophilia: a love for nature and all living things. Biophilic design embraces natural elements like organic shapes, textures, and light, aiming to recreate that feeling of calm and curiosity we experience outdoors.

Think about the last time you felt truly relaxed, maybe on a walk through the woods or sitting by the sea. Biophilic design seeks to bottle that feeling and bring it into our interiors. It’s about engaging all five senses indoors: the warmth of natural light, the texture of wood, the scent of greenery, and even the visual invitation to explore from room to room.

Jana’s Top Tips for Regenerative Interiors

You don’t need a full home renovation to embrace regenerative design. Jana shared some fantastic, practical ways to get started:

Maximise Natural Light:
Use taller, narrower windows to let light reach deeper into your rooms.
Keep curtains pulled back fully to avoid blocking sunlight.
Consider skylights, they can deliver up to 20 times more light than a traditional window.

Choose Natural, Recycled, or Reclaimed Materials:
Swap memory foam mattresses (which are landfill nightmares) for natural fibre alternatives like those from Devon-based Natural Mat.
Opt for sofas with recycled velvet, coconut fibre cushions, or FSC-certified wood frames.
For flooring, consider sustainable options like bamboo or cork. Both renew quickly and offer durability.

Create a Nature-Inspired Centrepiece:
Jana recommends gathering moss, pinecones, or driftwood from your next walk and creating a simple display on your dining table or hallway console.
Add a glass jar or an upcycled bottle to propagate plants, creating a mini landscape that evolves with the seasons.

Embrace Imperfection:
Straight lines and clinical perfection can create subconscious tension. Jana suggests softening a room’s feel with curves such as circular tables, arched mirrors, or even a statement curved lamp.

Shop Smart:
Seek out brands with transparent supply chains and a commitment to circular economy principles. Companies that take back products at the end of their life cycle or plant trees to offset emissions.

Leading by Example

Regenerative design isn’t just about the materials we choose; it’s about the mindset we cultivate. Designers, suppliers, and consumers form a cycle, each responsible for pushing the others towards better choices. Suppliers need to prioritize transparency and sustainability; designers need to educate and guide without patronising; and consumers need to embrace conscious purchasing decisions (yes, even if it means skipping the convenience of next-day delivery).

Jana’s honest reflections remind us that while sustainability can feel overwhelming, we don’t need to be perfect. We just need to start. Whether you begin with a single pinecone on your table or a complete redesign, the goal is the same: to create a home that feels alive, connected, and restorative.

Thank you to Jana and to our Conscious Entrepreneurs community for creating space to explore these powerful ideas. After all, who wouldn’t want to come home to a space that feels like a green hug?
