Choosing Better, Not Bigger: A Reflection on Business, Purpose, and Degrowth
This week, I had the privilege of attending a member session with the Sustainability Practitioners Association—a quiet but powerful network that I’m proud Conscious Entrepreneurs is part of.
We explored something many of us wrestle with as purpose-led business owners: how do we build a “better” business when there are so many routes, frameworks, and badges to choose from?
We weren’t looking to become a B Corp, or to sign up for CSR Accreditation or join The Organisation for Responsible Businesses (ORB)—but we were curious about what each of these frameworks stood for. And what stood out is just how valuable it is to have choice.
Each offers a different path towards being a responsible, values-led business. And that variety isn’t confusing—it’s hopeful. It signals a growing, vibrant movement of ethical business that is becoming more visible, more structured, and more supported.
Sufficient Is a Beautiful Goal
One of the most powerful themes in the conversation was about the idea of “enough.”
That we don’t need to chase as much money as possible. That we can build businesses that sustain us, our families, and our communities. Without compromising our values. And that if we do earn more than we need, we know how to use that surplus for good; for our planet, our communities, and the systems we want to help change.
This is the ethos that runs through Conscious Entrepreneurs too. We exist because not every business owner has the funds to access accreditation or formal certification. But that shouldn’t stop them from building a better business. Our membership is built to offer high-value resources and support at a lower cost. Because doing business well shouldn’t be a luxury.
The Degrowth Future
We also touched on the concept of degrowth. A term that, on the surface, can feel uncomfortable. But underneath it lies something powerful.
As Njenga Mayaf puts it in his article on degrowth:
“We cannot keep making, mining, burning, replacing.” Now is the time to reinvent, renew, refresh.
Degrowth doesn’t mean decline. It means deliberate redesign. It asks us to shift away from extraction and excess, and move toward regeneration, sufficiency, and community.
For small business owners like us, this isn’t just a concept. It’s an invitation.
A Space to Grow Gently
The people in the room were kind, positive, and thoughtful.
They reminded me that spaces like this, like Conscious Entrepreneurs, matter deeply.
Spaces where ideas can breathe, where there’s no pressure to prove yourself by your revenue alone.
Where growth is measured by impact, intention, and wellbeing.
So, here’s what I’m carrying forward:
A deepened appreciation for the diversity of frameworks guiding good business
Gratitude that we can offer an accessible, values-driven path for those building consciously
A growing belief that businesses like ours can thrive gently—and still change the world
If you’re navigating what being a ‘better business’ means for you, and wondering where to begin, know this: you’re not behind. There’s room for your version of impact, and we’re here to help you shape it.
